Cylinder Boring CenterAMC C4 Boring Mill
Key Benefits
CapabilitiesThe AMC Boring Mill provides the ability to bore any hole from 1.500" to 14.000". Our primary use is to "True" bore engine cylinders by utilizing K-Line 'Block True" and "Bore True" fixtures. These fixtures allow a block to be quickly aligned to the boring head and allow the cylinder to be bored to the "absolute" factory position and angle. The added benefit from boring allows us to bore within .004" of the finished size, creating a perfectly round cylinder. Then move to the Honing Work Center to hone the cylinder to its "Finished" size and surface. Honing vs. BoringThere are many arguments back and forth as to the benefits of Honing vs. Boring. In the perfect world, blocks come from the factory perfectly aligned, perfectly square, and perfectly round cylinders. Even under use these bores maintain their "perfect" shape. We all know this is not true or even close to being realistic. The major benefit of honing is that it does NOT tear the metal from the cylinder, but grinds it down. This works well to bring a cylinder back to round, but unfortunately a hone follows the existing bore line. Any mis-alignment still will exist. By boring a cylinder first, the machinist is able to re-align the cut to ensure the cylinder is placed were it should be. The down side to this is that the boring cutter "rips" the metal from the bore and fractures the cylinder wall. By boring the cylinder .004" to .005" smaller then honing the block to it finish sized, we are able to utilize the best of both worlds. With the hone removing the fractured metal left by the boring cutters. |
